History
Miri Airport at its present location was opened in the 1980s. The new airport terminal is 9.5 km (5.9 miles) south-east of the city centre.
Lutong Airport
Before the commencement of operations at current Miri Airport, residents and visitors of Miri were utilizing Lutong Airport as their primary air transport gateway to and from the city. The airport is a legacy of World War II Japanese occupation. It was then used by Royal Dutch Shell for the company’s air operation.
In the early 2000s, the airport was decommissioned and all of the buildings were demolished. However, its runway was still being used as a venue for vehicle drag racing and other recreational sports.
Nearby places
The airport is quite near to the city centre. Taxi ride to Miri city centre will cost you around RM 25 to RM 30, depending on the exact location.
Future plans
Miri Airport has been operating beyond its design capacity since 2012. The airport terminal was initially designed to handle up to 2 million passengers per annum. As of 2017, the airport handles 2,188,048 passengers, close to 110% of its original capacity.
In early 2018, an expansion project for the airport has commenced and it is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2019. The airport will be capable to cater for 3 million passengers per annum (mppa) and offers better facilities for domestic and international passengers.
In the upgrade plan, the airport will have separate departure hall for domestic and international flight. 200 additional parking bays will also be added to existing 412 bays.
