ATR 72 is a twin-engine turboprop aircraft manufactured by France-based ATR (Aerei da Trasporto Regionale or Avions de transport régional). It had its first flight on 27 October 1988.

MASwings (a Malaysia Airlines subsidiary) and Firefly are the two Malaysian operators who have been using ATR 72 aircraft in their operation. Before ATR 72-600 was introduced, they were using ATR 72-500s. Firefly was using 12 ATR 72-500s prior to introduction of ATR 72-600 in its service.
Apart from MASWings and Firefly, Malindo Air also has several ATR 72-600s in service.
