Transport Information

Getting to Kuching Airport is fairly easy. This is because the airport location is relatively near to the city center. Besides, there are many taxis available to cater to your needs.

If you are not a fan of taxi service, keep in mind that GrabCar is now available at Kuching International Airport. Grabcar is a ridesharing service that gives you a better rate than taxi service. At times, you can see taxi drivers can be a GrabCar driver as well.

In case if you are not able to book Grab or Uber ride, taxi rides to Kuching city centre will cost you around RM 25 to RM 30.

History

  • 1938: The first airport in Kuching is an airstrip constructed at 7th Mile (Bukit Stabar). It measures only 640 m long by 270 m wide.
  • 1950: A terminal building was added and opened for use on 26 September 1950. It is a small “L” shaped single story passenger terminal. Additionally, the airport also featured a small cargo facility as well as airport fire station.
  • 1954: Kuching International Airport becomes a gateway to Sarawak, Brunei and Sabah (known as North Borneo at that time). This is evident in a statistics in 1954 showing 1550 aircraft movements, 13,564 passengers, 95,911 kilograms of cargo and 25,984 mails.
  • 1959: The runway was extended to 1555 meters to make way for Vickers Viscount turboprop aircraft operations.
  • 2006, 17 April: The new terminal building was officially opened by the Prime Minister of Malaysia at that time, Tun Abdullah Haji Ahmad Badawi.

Incidents and Accidents

  • 2011, 10 January: AirAsia Flight 5218 skidded on the runway while landing. Four passengers were brought to Sarawak General Hospital. No fatalities recorded.
