History
In 2003, the Malaysian government has planned to build a RM 120 million airport in Kampung Paya on the island. The proposed airport will have a 2,000m long and 45m wide runway with sufficient capacity to accommodate a Boeing 737 aircraft. However, the transport minister has cancelled the project in 2009, citing environmental concerns.
On 7 June 2018, Berjaya Group has announced that it would submit a proposal to the Malaysian government for a new airport in Tioman Island, costing it about RM 1.2 billion. The proposed airport will be fully financed by the group’s internal fund and borrowings. Tan Sri Vincent Tan has also said the airport would be managed by the government if it is approved. On 11 June 2018, the managing director of Malaysian Airport Holding Berhad (MAHB), Datuk Badlisham Ghazali said that it is not possible to build a new airport in Pulau Tioman without land reclamation process. Since the land reclamation process will impact the environment around the island, the project was turned down by MAHB.
