Upgrades
RM 200 million of budget allocation has been approved by Malaysian Government to upgrade the airport, which includes terminal and runway upgrade. The upgraded terminal is designed to handle 2 million passengers every year. The airport is also capable of handling Boeing 747 aircraft. On 11 October 2008, a Malaysia Airlines Boeing 747-400 landed on the airport in a flight from Kuala Lumpur, making it the first landing at the airport for such kind of aircraft.
Baggage scanner is also absent at Customs counter, domestic arrival hall. On March 5th 2013, a couple flew in from Chennai, having made their transit at KLIA and Changi Airport before arriving at Sultan Mahmud Airport. The lack of baggage scanner at Sultan Mahmud Airport enabled them to skip detailed baggage screening. However, their suspicious flight arrangement fired back at them when they were detained shortly after landing. Source

History
A proposed hub for a new airline
Sultan Mahmud Airport was once chosen to be the hub of a proposed unnamed airline, managed by Airwael Malaysia. However, a Google search for Airwael Malaysia revealed a fairly outdated website or Airwael Malaysia. Besides, there is no recent news in the search result that points directly to Airwael beyond 2012.
